چکیده

How much do caloric requirements vary across households and how do they affect food consumption patterns? Since caloric intake is a widely-used indicator of poverty and welfare, investigating changes in caloric requirements and food consumption patterns is important, especially for the poor. Combining anthropometric and time-use data for India, we construct a quantitative measure of individual and household caloric requirements. We then link our estimates of caloric requirements with consumption data to examine how caloric requirements coupled with household expenditures shape food demand. Our applications include the measurement of hunger and the role of caloric requirements in explaining food consumption puzzles related to household-scale and changes in caloric intake over time. ∗Corresponding author: [email protected]. Can caloric needs explain three food consumption puzzles? Evidence from India

We argue that differences in caloric needs can help explain three food consumption puzzles that have been noted in the literature. The first puzzle (Deaton and Dreze (2009)) is the stagnant or declining caloric intake of Indian household despite significant economic growth between 1983-2005. The second puzzle (Deaton and Paxson (1998)) is the negative relationship between household size and cal...

Soy Consumption and Obesity

Obesity is now present worldwide, including China, India and developing countries. It now seems no longer acceptable to argue that obesity can simply be explained in terms of caloric consumption only using simple concept of energy in and energy out. There may be specific causes of altered metabolism that produce nutritional imbalances. Individual variation in response to food intake may also be...

Thermic effect of food in lean and obese men.

A systemic reappraisal of the thermic effect of food was done in lean and obese males randomly fed mixed meals containing 0, 8, 16, 24, and 32 kcal/kg fat-free mass. Densitometric analysis was used to measure body composition. Preprandial and postprandial energy expenditures were measured by indirect calorimetry. The data show that the thermic effect of food was linearly correlated with caloric...
